Miracles Do Happen

Casey is a bright and sweet 10 year old boy who is perfect in the eyes of God and who just happens to have cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus.

Cerebral Palsy is a condition caused by injury to the parts of the brain that control our ability to use our muscles and bodies. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles. Often the injury happens before birth, sometimes during delivery or soon after being born. Cerebral Palsy can be mild, moderate, or severe. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within cavities called ventricles inside the brain which is treated with a surgical insertion of a shunt. Casey is a phenomenal young man with a great attitude.  He is a true believer in miracles and in his faith.

Here is what Casey has to say about his story and his miracle:

 Hello.   My name is Casey Michael Schallenberg.  I was born 13 weeks too early and I have cerebral palsy because of underdeveloped lungs and not getting enough oxygen to my brain when I was born.  I also have hydrocephalus.  I was a twin but God had a special plan for my sister in Heaven.  I believe she watches over me and I talk to her everyday.  Her name is Kelsi Marie.  She is my guardian angel.

According to the doctors, I would not walk or talk and my parents were told to just take me home, love me and not to expect much from me.  They did take me home and they love me more than anything, but they refused to believe that I would not walk or talk.  In fact, when I was 2 years old, I was booted out of speech therapy.  I think it was because I told the therapist that her legs were sticky. J  Evidently, I was already saying too much at the age of two.  Now, at age 10, I still have so much to say…..

I want to send my message to everyone.  I want people to know that they should never give up faith.  If you believe in the Lord, He will be there for you.  He will answer your prayers.  I know this because He answered my prayers and I experienced a miracle.  Just a year and a half ago when I was 9 years old, I took my first independent steps. 

I CAN NOW WALK!!

My family and I prayed a lot and the Lord lead my parents to find the best alternative therapies and the least invasive surgery across the country.  I began to walk for the first time in my life.  We would not give up and we prayed that God would help us with our journey toward finding my miracle in walking.  I am a true believer in miracles and in faith.

My story is here on Dr. Bauer’s website because he said that I made an impression in his life.  One day after church, he gave me some of his CDs to listen to.  I loved his CDs and now, I will be working with him and doing some motivational public speaking with him.  He told me that Jesus said a little child shall lead them.  I am hoping to share my story and send my message to as many people as I can about never giving up and also about how important it is to have a positive attitude.  I also want people to believe in prayers, healing, miracles, and in God’s love.

Before my miracle, I used a wheelchair and could not walk or stand at all.  It really hurt to bear weight on my feet.  I could not straighten my legs.  My muscles were very tight.  My doctors were telling my parents and me that my legs “were not made for walking.”  I would just tell myself that I’ve come this far already, I am not about to give up and nothing is going to stop me now.  I even took up baseball and karate when I couldn’t walk.  I always knew one day I would hit that ball standing up and would someday get in some good karate kicks.  I wasn’t giving up and I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from doing what I wanted to do.   Now, I play baseball while standing and not in my wheelchair or kneeling anymore.  It’s such a good feeling to stand behind the base and bat that ball.  Karate is lots of fun while standing instead of kneeling.  I have to use my walker at Karate sometimes but it won’t be like that forever.  I’ll be kicking up high and running and jumping at karate in no time.

I feel very blessed and I thank God everyday for giving me the meaning and goodness of life and for filling it with such a wonderful family and wonderful friends.

Here is Casey in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  Casey's very first miracle was that of surviving a premature birth due to a uterine rupture.  Uterine rupture is a deadly obstetrical emergency endangering the life of both mother and fetus.
